Longtime deputy to run for Linn County Treasurer

Sharon Gonzalez, a longtime deputy Linn County treasurer, will run to replace her outgoing boss, Treasurer Mike Stevenson.

Gonzalez, 49, of 3805 Tarpy Dr., Cedar Rapids, has worked in the Treasurer's Office since 1979. She's been a deputy since 1986, working in the office's motor vehicle division.

“I think the public deserves the most efficient experience we can provide them,” said Gonzalez, a Democrat. “If I get elected, I will provide fresh ideas and positive solutions to the Linn County Treasurer's Office.”

She offered no specifics on changes she would make to the department.

Nobody has announced he or she will run against Gonzalez. That's not surprising, considering that Stevenson ran unopposed in every election from 1990 to 2006, he enthusiastically endorses Gonzalez, and Gonzalez is a member of the Linn County Democratic Central Committee.

Anyone who wants to run for treasurer should file nomination papers with the Linn County Auditor's Office by March 31. The primary is June 8.

Gonzalez and her husband, Emilio, have been married for 27 years and have two grown children.

The Linn County treasurer makes $87,622 per year.

Stevenson has announced he will not run for re-election, retiring after 24 years as treasurer.
