Linebacker DiBona among 13 Hawkeyes sickened after workouts
Jan. 28, 2011 7:50 am
We've learned freshman linebacker Shane Dibona is one of the 13 Hawkeye players being treated for a muscle disorder following winter workouts that started last week.
This is according to WBZ-TV in Boston.
DiBona is from Duxbury, Massachusetts.
A reporter at WBZ spoke with DiBona's mother and his high school football coach. His coach told the station he spoke to Shane, who said it was the hardest workout of his life.
Shane's mother told a reporter that he could be out of the hospital as early as tomorrow.
Also new this morning, sources tell the Sporting News that all 13 players have been tested for illegal drugs and all the tests came back negative.
This is important because drugs like cocaine and other amphetamines can contribute to the muscle disorder.
Yesterday, The Iowa Board of Regents spoke about the matter. In a joint statement, U of I President Sally Mason and Board of Regents President David Miles called it a "grave concern." They said it's the responsibility of the university to determine what caused the rare condition among so many athletes.
They're giving the university 90 days to give a report on its investigation.
