Kitchen fire damages two Iowa City apartments

Two families have been affected after an Iowa City apartment caught fire and caused smoke damage to the neighboring residence.
The Iowa City Fire Department responded to a report of a kitchen fire at 1102 Hollywood Blvd, Apartment 2 at at 10:32 p.m. on Friday, January 12, according to a news release.
According to the release, the first unit arrived on scene four minutes after notification and reported a working fire with smoke coming from two sides of the structure, which was quickly contained and extinguished.
One person suffered minor injuries and was examined by ambulance staff but declined to seek hospital care. The damage was contained to the kitchen of the apartment that caught fire but smoke damage extended to a second apartment, according to the release.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Department.
The Red Cross provided assistance to families in two apartments.
