Jury will resume deliberations in donut shooter trial

The jury is going home for the day and will resume deliberations 9 a.m. Monday in the attempted murder trial of Derrick Roberts in Linn County District Court.
The jury started deliberations about 4:35 p.m. Thursday but only stayed long enough to select a foreperson before going home for the evening. They actually started discussing the case today.
Roberts, 25, of Cedar Rapids, is charged with attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and willful injury causing serious injury. He is accused of shooting Delores Smith, 50, of Cedar Rapids, while she was in a parked van outside of Mildred Allen's home in the 1200 block of Third Avenue SE. Smith was seriously injured in the shooting.
