Johnson County supervisors to vote on travel ban to states with ‘religious freedom’ laws

JOHNSON COUNTY - A member of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors says the board plans to put a 'travel ban” on county travel to Indiana, and any state, that enacts a 'religious freedom” law.
Last week Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed a law that many critics say will allow businesses to legally discriminate against members of the LGBT community.
'We're very supportive of inclusiveness,” said Johnson County Supervisor Janelle Rettig. 'That's how we want to invest our money.”
Rettig said the travel ban would mean county employees wouldn't be permitted to travel to Indiana for official business, including conferences or other training sessions.
'We do not want Johnson County resources spent in entities that sanction discrimination,” Rettig said.
Rettig said the ban will extend to any state that passes such a law.
'We travel fairly frequently,” she said. 'Next month, 15 to 20 people are going to Wisconsin.”
The board is expected to vote on the measure next week.
