IOWA CITY - The Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Thursday night unanimously approved an $84 million budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1.
The budget sets the tax levy for unincorporated areas at $9.84 per $1,000 of taxable value, down from $10.09 this year.
The levy for property within city limits will be $6.75, a decrease from $7 this year.
The owner of a home in unincorporated Johnson County assessed at $100,000 will pay $499.31 in property taxes next year, up $13.05 from this year. The owner of a home within city limits in Johnson County assessed at $100,000 will pay $342.53 in property taxes this year, up $11.47 from last year in Iowa City and $17.12 more in other cities. The change is partly due to the lower levy and partly because the state's rollback formula - which determines the percentage of a residential property's value that's subject to taxation - is increasing from 48.53 percent to 50.75 percent.
Agricultural buildings and agricultural, commercial and industrial properties will pay less in taxes.
