CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids native John C. Culver, who served 16 years in the United States House and Senate, will be honored at City Hall on Tuesday, city officials announced on Monday.
The conference room for the city council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, which formerly served as the federal building, will be renamed the John C. Culver Conference Room. The renaming will be noted with a reception, ribbon cutting and portrait before the city council meeting at 11 a.m. on Tuesday.
'Senator Culver has honorably served and represented the State of Iowa and City of Cedar Rapids over many years,” Cedar Rapids Mayor Ron Corbett said in a news release. 'The naming of this room is our way to acknowledge his contributions and service to our City. We hope that Senator Culver's example of public service will serve as an inspiration to the next generation of young people in our community.”
Culver and his son, former Gov. Chet Culver, will be in attendance, along with other family members.
John Culver lived in Cedar Rapids from age 3 until his college years. He attended local public schools and graduated from Franklin High School in 1950, according to a statement from the city. He was a practicing attorney in Cedar Rapids before being elected to Congress in 1964. He served five terms in the House and one in the Senate, and later served on a variety of public boards and commissions.
