If you had to walk outside to get your morning paper, you already know it's cold.
The National Weather Service announced a wind chill advisory for Eastern Iowa that will stay into affect until noon today.
Winds were gusting from 10 to 15 mph last night, making the 12-below temperature feel closer to around 20 below.
KCRG-TV9 meteorologist Josh Baynes said that temperatures will continue to drop and he expects a low of 14 below by tonight, but that wind speeds will slow, which should offset the overall chill from what he says might be the coldest night of this winter season.
Parts of north central Iowa, ranging from Charles City to Waterloo are under a wind chill warning, which is when wind chill level drop below -25 degrees.
The good news though, is that we won't see any precipitation. For now, anyhow.
“The coldest days and nights are those without any snow or precipitation,” said Baynes. “But frostbite can happen in 30 minutes when the windchill drops thirty to 40 degrees below zero, which is what we're expecting overnight further north.”
The wind chill warning will be lifted by 9 a.m. today, but Baynes said that it's possible Iowans may see another set of advisories as cold temperatures persist.
