UPDATE: In a scene straight out of a State Farm commercial, police in Cedar Rapids discovered a boat and trailer up a pole Tuesday night.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said a 14-foot boat and trailer struck a wooden pole around 10:15 p.m. in the 600 block of J Avenue NE, and the driver left the scene. The bow of the boat was elevated along the pole and a guy wire.
Officers had been dispatched to the scene after a witness reported the crash, and said sparks were flying from a transformer on the pole.
Hamblin said it appeared someone was westbound with the boat when the trailer came unhitched for some reason. A boat ramp to the Cedar River is just west of the crash site.
The trailer and boat were towed away and impounded until the owner could be located.
