Some West Des Moines high school students have been selling T-shirts and conducting other fundraisers to help return the body of a classmate to Iraq.
Eighteen-year-old Husam Abdul-Hameed was killed Saturday night in an accident alongside Interstate 80 on the west side of Des Moines.
Abdul-Hameed's family left Iraq more than two years and ended up in Iowa. He was a senior at Valley High School.
His classmates have raised about $1,000 for Abdul-Hameed's family, which says $15,000 is needed to return his body to Iraq.
A friend of Abdul-Hameed, Rafiq Amro, told The Des Moines Register that Abdul-Hameed was excited to come to the United States, and then Iowa, "because he could see his future and finishing college."
