Will sales of Everclear and other highly-concentrated alcohol products be restricted or banned in Iowa?
The Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission is looking into the future of Everclear, a 151-proof liquor which is among the state's 100 best-selling products. The commission isn't necessarily looking to ban the liquor, but may consider tightening regulations and offering more public education.
State regulators decided about six months ago to stop selling the 190-proof Everclear in Iowa, but the 151-proof version is still available. A 19-year-old Des Moines man was rushed to a Des Moines hospital earlier this month after ingesting a large amount of Everclear as part of an alleged fraternity hazing incident at Drake University.
The commission is now accepting public input on the issue.
