Iowa man sentenced for sexually abusing 2-year-old girl
A 43-year-old northeast Iowa man has been sentenced to life in prison for a sex assault that injured a 2-year-old girl.
Waterloo television station KWWL says Ricky Putman was formally sentenced on Thursday. He'd been convicted on Dec. 12 of first-degree sexual assault causing serious injury. The offense carries a mandatory life term.
Prosecutors say Putman assaulted the girl in May 2010 while staying at a friend's home in Fayette County. The toddler was hospitalized after the attack.
According to the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier, Assistant Iowa Attorney General Denise Timmins said during closing arguments earlier this month that the girl's injuries were not accidental. She said Putman "committed what most people would consider an unthinkable act, an unimaginable act."
