Iowa gets Insight date with Missouri
Dec. 6, 2010 7:13 am
IOWA CITY - After a whirlwind day of bowl match-ups and locations, Iowa will play in Arizona against a border rival.
Nebraska? Not a chance. Missouri? Yes, and this time it's going to happen.
Iowa (7-5) and Missouri (10-2) will play in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 28 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The match-up concludes a day that had Iowa possibly heading to the Gator Bowl or playing future Big Ten rival Nebraska at the Insight Bowl.
Although the Iowa-Missouri game might lack the fan intensity of Iowa-Nebraska, it won't lack for storylines. The schools originally signed a four-year contract to play from 2005 to 2008 but Missouri voided the first two years of the deal. Iowa then canceled the rest of the series, which led to hard feelings on both sides. Missouri replaced Iowa in 2005 with a road game at Arrowhead Stadium against Arkansas State.
The schools have played 12 times but not in more than 100 years. Their last meeting was Oct. 15, 1910 in Columbia, Mo. Missouri leads the series 7-5.
Both teams have players from the opposite state. For Iowa, wide receivers Marvin McNutt, Don Shumpert and Paul Chaney, linebacker Christian Kirksey and defensive end Adrian Clayborn all hail from the St. Louis area. Mizzou offensive linemen Matt Hoch and Dan Hoch are Harlan natives. Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith attended Cedar Rapids Washington before moving to the Kansas City area.
Missouri posted several big wins this year, including back-to-back victories over Texas A&M and Oklahoma, respectively. The Tigers stumbled against Nebraska 31-17 and Texas Tech (24-17) that kept them from advancing to the Big 12 title game.
