Cancer patients and their families have found a new hope in Iowa City for the past year.
The Russell and Ann Gerdin American Cancer Society Hope Lodge marked its first anniversary Thursday.
In its first year, the facility has helped more than 420 guests and caregivers in their fight against cancer by providing free lodging.
The average occupancy was about 80 percent, with an average guest stay of about 33 days. There is a small waiting list now.
Hope Lodge had a guest satisfaction rating from 112 completed guest surveys of 96 percent.
Programs in Hope Lodge, such as potluck dinners, music therapy and arts and crafts events, had more than 1,100 attendees, an average of nearly three support programs attended by each guest or caregiver.
Organizers say Hope Lodge could not exist without tremendous assistance from volunteers. In the first year, more than 80 volunteers donated 2,500 hours to keep everything running smoothly, from sitting at the front desk, to cleaning, to laundry and more.
“We couldn't be more proud of the way things have turned out at the Hope Lodge,” said Marcia Holley, Director of Corporate Relations and Major Gifts for the American Cancer Society. “The American Cancer Society, the Gerdins and all the donors and volunteers responsible for the Hope Lodge had a vision for this wonderful place, and reality has exceeded our dreams.”
