A Chicago-area woman laid her murdered mother to rest on Tuesday, and says she will come to Iowa City today to go through her mom's things.
Tanisha Por, 26, said Wednesday night that her mother, Maryrosa Russell-Green, moved to Iowa City in November to escape city life.
“She was tired of all the violence that was going on,” Por said.
Por said her mother had started working at a Cedar Rapids fast food restaurant.
“She was just very excited about getting back to work,” Por said.
Por said her mother's move to Iowa worked out well, but that she was disappointed when Por said that she wasn't following her mom west.
“I didn't want to leave my job to come there and be jobless for a while," Por said. "I was used to having money and I knew that I wasn't going to have money.”
Police say the 44-year-old Russell-Green and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Charles King, were parked on a Chicago street when another car drove up and shots were fired. Both were pronounced dead at a hospital.
Por said police have two suspects in the case, but that no arrests have been made.
Por said her mom was missing Por and Por's son and was looking to move back to Chicago. She was in the neighborhood where she was shot because she was looking at a potential home, Por said.
