CEDAR RAPIDS - It's West and Waverly.
Iowa City West is the top-ranked boys' basketball team in Class 4A in the final Gazette poll of the season. Waverly-Shell Rocky finishes first in 3A.
Seeking its fourth straight state championship, West went 21-0 in the regular season, concluding things impressively last Saturday with a 15-point win over Minneapolis De La Salle. The Islanders are ranked No. 1 in Minnesota's Class 3A (it also has four classes) and also is a defending three-time state champion.
North Scott (18-3) moved from third to second this week after a win over Pleasant Valley (19-2), which lost twice and dropped from second to fourth. Des Moines Hoover (19-1) is third, Waukee (16-5) fifth and Linn-Mar (17-4) sixth.
Ankeny Centennial (18-3) lost to Hoover and dropped from sixth to 10. That's more because it lost leading rebounder and second-leading scorer Jay Schon to a broken ankle.
Waverly (19-2) concludes as the top team in a topsy turvy 3A. Fort Madison (19-2) is second, Williamsburg (20-1) third, Pella (18-2) fourth and Spirit Lake (18-3) fifth.
Cedar Rapids Xavier (13-8) finished the regular season on a four-game win streak, including victories over Linn-Mar and Dubuque Wahlert, and moved into the 3A poll at No. 7. Wahlert (12-9) dropped from third to eighth, but remains a viable threat to repeat as state champ.
