Police had to resort to using a Taser against a man at an Iowa City apartment complex Monday night after several people refused to cooperate when officers tried to break up a fight.
According to criminal complaints, police were sent to Dolphin Lake Point Enclave, 2401 Highway 6, at 9:40 p.m. They had received a report of a loud noise and fighting going on inside an apartment .
After hearing people fighting inside, police said they had to repeatedly pound on the door to get someone to answer. When someone finally opened the door, two men inside the apartment attempted to slam the door shut on the officers. But when officers pushed back, the door was knocked off the frame and police entered the apartment.
Police said several men inside refused to get on the floor. As a result, two police officers Tased 20-year-old William Williams. Officers then ordered Williams to roll onto his stomach, but Williams began to kick at the officers and was assaultive until he was placed in handcuffs.
Williams was charged with assault on a police officer, interference with official acts and disorderly conduct. Arrest records show a 17-year-old juvenile was also charged with assault on a police officer and disorderly conduct. Rhoda R. M. Gorvin, 18, was cited for disorderly house.
Williams is being held in the Johnson County Jail Tuesday on a $2,500 cash-only bond.
