IOWA CITY - Authorities have charged an Iowa City man with attempted murder after police say he used a piece of broken glass to stab his wife multiple times.
Police say Scott A. Bender, 48, was involved in a 'physical domestic abuse assault” with his wife Wednesday morning when the stabbing happened at their home in the 2800 block of Brookside Drive.
'The assault escalated when the victim fell into a broken window,” a criminal complaint states. 'The defendant then got on top of the victim, armed himself with a piece of broken glass then began stabbing the victim multiple times. During the stabbing, the defendant told the victim: ‘You are dead.'”
Bender came within five centimeters of his wife's carotid artery, according to the complaint. She also suffered multiple stab wounds to her body, according to police. The condition of the victim was not immediately available Wednesday night.
The complaint states the attack ended when the couple's son intervened.
Bender is currently being held at the Johnson County Jail without bond. Attempted murder is a Class B felony and is punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
