A 32-year-old Iowa City man was arrested on felony charges of going armed with intent and willful injury causing serious injury as well as fourth-degree criminal mischief and interference with official acts causing bodily injury after officers with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office chased him down on Friday night.
Reports indicate that Iowa City Police officers responded to 1102 Hollywood Boulevard after receiving reports of a fight in progress at around 8:21 a.m. last Tuesday. Upon contact, officers were told that Francisco Nunez, also known as Whickio Gomez and Aturo Alegra, of 431 Dakota Trail, had wielded a butcher knife at an individual.
According to the individual, Nunez had allegedly come out of the kitchen, tried to attack him with a butcher knife and then punched him in the face. The man said that Nunez swung the knife at him and then fled the scene, Iowa City Police said.
Iowa City Police reports indicate that the man who reported the incident sustained injuries including a broken eye socket and had to receive stitches to his lower eye.
At around 8:30 p.m. on Friday night a Johnson County Sheriff's Department Officer and Deputy were responding to a 911 hang up on Apache Trail when they were stopped by a man that said a Hispanic male named “Frank,” later identified as Nunez, had run into his home.
Records indicate that authorities announced that they were with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office when they entered the residence and ordered “Frank” to stop running. When he did not stop, they went after him.
Nunez went over a white fence and when the Officer tried to scale it, a board bent back and hit him in the face and bicep, causing a cut to the left side of his face. Nunez was then arrested on charges of interference with official acts, the Johnson County Sheriff's Office said.
Formerly listed as a resident of 921 Oak Street, Muscatine, Nunez was also arrested on charges of fourth-degree criminal mischeif in May after a woman allegedly witnessed him throw a rock through the rear window of her parked car in Iowa City on May 9.
Nunez was being held at the Johnson County Jail on a $48,500 cash only bond Sunday morning.
Willful injury causing serious injury is a class C felony punishable by up to ten years in prison and a maximum $10,000 fine. Going armed with intent is a class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum $7,500 fine.
