Iowa City man arrested for indecent exposure at convenience store

Iowa City police arrested a man after he reportedly exposed himself at a convenience store Friday.

James R. Hirt, 67, described by police as a transient, was arrested for indecent exposure at 7:48 p.m. Friday after entering the Casey's store at 1410 Willow Creek Dr. in Iowa City multiple times with his pants around his ankles, exposing himself.

According to police reports, Hirt entered the store,  sat down in a booth, and turned his body away from the female store clerk.  Hirt then reached around to grab himself while turning his head to stare at the clerk.

Police said Hirt re-entered the store four more times in a short time span, each time with his pants around his ankles.

Officers said when they arrived, Hirt was sitting with his shorts around his ankles. After spotting police, he quickly pulled up his shorts and returned to his camper van.

Indecent exposure is a serious misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in  jail and a fine of up to $1,500.
