Iowa City man arrested for impregnating 13-year-old

An Iowa City man has been charged with impregnating a 13-year-old girl in 2007.

Joshua A. Hesseltine, now 19, has been charged with third-degree sexual abuse, a Class C felony.

According to a criminal complaint, police were notified of the potential sexual abuse in April 2010 by a third party. After the notification, police investigated the situation using DNA testing and confirmed Hesseltine  as the father of the child. He was 16 when the child was conceived.

The victim gave birth to a boy on July 31, 2008. At the time of the delivery, the girl was 14 years and 36 days old, making her 13 when the child was conceived.

Police said a person commits third-degree sexual abuse if they perform a sex act while the other person is 12 or 13 years of age and the two are not cohabiting as husband and wife at the time.
