An Iowa City man who pleaded guilty to assault, dismissing an attempted murder charge, has been arrested for assaulting a peace officer.
Officers were called to 415 E. Washington St. in Iowa City on Monday for a report of suspicious activity in the area and located Harry Rayton IV, 23, of 225 Fairchild Dr. Police said he showed signs intoxicated and said he had no idea whose vehicle he entered.
While officers assisted Rayton into a patrol car he kicked officers, and was verbally abusive and used vulgar language towards the officer.
He was charged with assault on peace officers and others and third-degree burglary.
Rayton pleaded guilty in October to assault causing injury after police said on June 13, Rayton and Adam Burkart, 19, attacked Burkart's neighbor, Joseph Holley, 37, after Holley had told Burkart to quit coming into his room without knocking.
Police said Rayton repeatedly kicked and punched Holley while Burkart stabbed him six times in the chest, back and abdomen. Holley suffered deep stab wounds and a broken rib. Burkhart was acquitted of attempted murder charges by a jury. Rayton was sentenced to 110 days but received credit for the time served since his June 15 arrest.
