An Iowa City man was arrested for operating while intoxicated, driving while license denied or revoked and eluding police after he drove away from an officer trying to pull him over at 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning.
Reports indicate that Derek T. Messenger, 23, was initially pulled over by an officer for driving the wrong way on a one way street in Iowa City. Messenger backed away from the officer and drove the vehicle away before parking it and attempting to flee on foot. Messenger was apprehended soon after.
Messenger allegedly admitted to fleeing because he said he was intoxicated. Messenger failed all field sobriety tests and a preliminary breath test registered that he had .262 blood alcohol content, Iowa City Police said.
According to police reports, Messenger had a previous operating while intoxicated conviction in May 2010.
Messenger was being held at the Johnson County Jail waiting to see a judge on Sunday morning.
