Iowa City man accused of exposing himself to woman at gym

An Iowa City man was arrested for exposing himself and masturbating in front of a woman exercising at a gym, according to police reports.

On Jan. 9 at the Scanlon Gym/Mercer Park Aquatic Center, 2701 Bradford Dr., around 8:48 p.m., police said Donald Fennelly, 58, exposed himself and began "vigorously" masturbating in front of the female victim, who was walking on a treadmill.

The female left to alert a staff member, who then entered the room to find Fennelly riding a stationary bike, police said.

According to the report, police reviewed surveillance video which showed Fennelly lying on a mat in front of the treadmills when he exposed himself and masturbated. The woman promptly left the room when she noticed Fennelly "playing with himself," she told police.

Fennelly is charged with indecent exposure, a serious misdemeanor.

Fennelly is also charged with possession of a controlled substance after police found marijuana in his sock at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St., on Wednesday, according to police.
