An Iowa City man is accused of domestic abuse assault and assault while using or displaying a weapon after Iowa City Police say he allegedly grabbed a woman and tried to slash her son with a knife.
Records indicate that Russell J. Barbary, 44, of 1015 Cross Park Avenue Apt. D, called authorities in reference to an altercation with his girlfriend's son at approximately 1:23 a.m. Saturday.
Authorities say they learned that Barbary allegedly became intoxicated, went home in violation of a no contact order and then began arguing with the woman.
At some point Barbary allegedly grabbed the woman's clothing around her neck and pushed her. The woman's adult son woke up during the alleged incidentand then attempted to intervene, police said.
Barbary then allegedly went into the kitchen, grabbed a knife and attempted to slash the woman's son with it.
The son was able to get the knife away from Barbary, but suffered several abrasions and minor lacerations consistent with a knife wound, authorities said.
Barbary was being held at the Johnson County Jail Monday morning on a $10,500 bond.
He also faces charges of consumption/intoxication, possession of a controlled substance and violation of a no-contact order.
