Iowa City High wrestlers described a frightening scene to The Little Hawk newspaper following a bus rollover last week. The bus was taking the team to a meet in New London when the bus lost control and rolled over at about 7:05 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 on Highway 218 in Riverside.
“The bus driver told us to hold on,” said Daquay Campbell. “I thought she was turning but then the bus began to roll.”
The bus had hit the median and said to roll over three times before coming to a stop on its side. Passengers were dislodged from their seats and thrown around the bus.
“It was scary because some guys were sleeping when the bus crashed,” said Campbell. “They were lying on each other and not moving,” said Campbell.
Assistant coach Richard Kunc carried injured wrestlers out of the bus until paramedics arrived. Kunc found out at the hospital that he had fractured his ribs. Seven wrestlers and the bus driver sustained injuries from the accident.

According to the Washington County Sheriff's Department, an Iowa City School District bus went into the median and onto its side near the intersection of U.S. Highway 218 and 160th Street in rural Washington County, south of Riverside. Students on the bus were moved to a Highland Community School District bus and transported to an area hospital for evaluation. (Matt Nelson/The Gazette)
