Iowa City fire department ends 24-hour presence at landfill fire

The Iowa City fire department has ceased its 24-hour presence at the Iowa City landfill fire, following the success of its "stir, burn and cover" extinguishing method employed June 11.
Iowa City fire Chief Andy Rocca said the department's round-the-clock presence ended June 13, shifting efforts to a maintenance mode headed by Iowa City's public works office. Rocca said the department still offers assistance when the public works office needs help with something beyond their capability, such as wetting down hot spots.
Before June 13, the department had the landfill staffed 24 hours a day, with 12-hour shifts. Each shift had a three-person engine company.
Rocca said officials haven't yet calculated the amount of money and manpower put into fighting the landfill fire.
