The impact of a proposed merger of Continental and United Airlines on The Eastern Iowa Airport is uncertain.
United offers four direct flights daily to Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Denver International Airport. Continental does not provide service to the Cedar Rapids airport.
Continental's Web site on Monday indicated that the merger with United would continue the direct flights and provide connecting service from Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities International Airport in Moline to 254 destinations. It did not provide a separate breakout for each airport's connecting flights.
The Cedar Rapids Airport Commission, which operates The Eastern Iowa Airport, applied for a $788,178 federal grant in July 2003 to attract Continental service. The grant, which was not approved, would have provided startup funding for twice-daily regional jet service to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.
