Hy-Vee Inc. CEO and Chairman Ric Jurgens used the company's annual meeting Wednesday to announce his retirement.
Jurgens, 62, plans to retire effective June 1, the company said in a statement. He will recommend that Randy Edeker, Hy-Vee's current president and chief operating officer, succeed him as chairman and CEO.
Jurgens was promoted to Hy-Vee's top post in 2006. He gained a reputation in the food retailing industry as a leader in health and wellness, the company said, with innovations such as in-store dietitians, the NuVal nutritional scoring system, and sponsorship of the Hy-Vee Triathlon.
Jurgens also oversaw a period of strong growth at the company, which now has 235 stores and sales of $7.3 billion.
