Hot and humid weather, coupled with a chance for thunderstorms, is expected in Eastern Iowa this week, with heat index readings possibly exceeding 100 degrees.
The National Weather Service on Monday issued a special weather statement that forecasts possible heat indexes for Linn and Johnson counties, among others, of between 95 and 105 degrees through Wednesday.
'Wednesday might be one of worst days across the state, (the heat index in the) upper 90s and near 105,” said Zach Uttech, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.
The forecast calls for a chance of thunderstorms each day until Thursday.
Tuesday's forecast calls for a high of 86 degrees with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day and a low of 73 degrees and a 20 to 50 percent chance of thunderstorms at night.
On Wednesday, the temperature is expected to hit 91 degrees with a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the day.
Thursday calls for partly sunny skies, then a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms during the day and a high of 84 degrees.
Uttech said the latter part of the week is expected to bring temperatures back into the upper 80s and low 90s.
The National Weather Service advises those spending time outside in hot and humid weather to drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade.
It also reminds people not to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
