Now that Christmas is over, it's about time to lug the tree to the curb to have it hauled away - but different cities have different rules you'll need to follow to have crews pick it up.
CEDAR RAPIDS
Unflocked trees will be picked up on your usual collection day through Jan. 15.
l Remove ornaments, wires, decorations and the stand.
l Do not place the tree in a plastic bag.
l Cut the tree into 3-foot sections that are no larger than 2 feet in diameter.
Cedar Rapids considers flocked trees and artificial trees as garbage items, and there is an added fee for pickup.
In both cases, the trees must be cut into 3-foot sections and a $1.50 garbage sticker must be affixed to each section before they are set out with the rest of the garbage. If you are unable to separate an artificial tree into 3-foot sections, call the Solid Waste & Recycling Office at (319) 286-5897 to schedule a special pickup at an additional fee.
IOWA CITY
Curbside recycling for natural trees is Jan. 8 through Feb. 2. Leave the tree curbside on your usual pickup day.
l The trees will be picked up at no additional charge and composted at the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center.
l Do not place your tree in a plastic bag and make sure to remove all decorations, lights, stands and so on.
l For disposal of an artificial tree call (319) 356-5151 to schedule a pick up at an additional fee.
A small pile of Christmas trees sits in the Sac & Fox trail parking lot at Bertram Road and Wilder Drive SE in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, December 30, 2017. The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation department has established two locations for the collection of real Christmas trees and wreaths. Trees at the Sac & Fox parking lot will be chipped and used by Indian Creek Nature Center on nature trails while trees left at Prairie Park Fishery, 2125 Otis Road SE will be set on the ice to become habitat for fish once the ice melts in the spring.
