WAVERLY -- Washington Irving Elementary School is a finalist to win a school library makeover sponsored by Acer and Intel.
Ten schools are vying for the grand prize – 10 Acer Timeline Notebooks and two Acer All-In-One Desktops – worth $12,000.
The finalists were announced earlier this month. Online votes to determine the winner will be accepted at until March 31.
Washington Irving Elementary School was hit by the historic flood of 2008, which left an inch of mud throughout the media center and the entire first floor of the building. School staff were not able to rescue materials on the lower shelves of the media center before the flood. All shelving, chairs, tables, computer towers, printers, and anything that was on the floor was a loss.
The fifth and sixth grade school has since relocated to warehouse space in a strip mall, where it will remain until a new facility is finished in August 2011. The school has received donations to help replenish the lost instructional materials for the media center, but it still isn't back to its pre-flood stage.
School staff said winning the library makeover would go a long way towards helping meet the growing technology needs of students.
