Up to two inches of rain fell in a short time over Linn County this afternoon as a narrow band of heavy rain moved through.
The National Weather Service says the band stretches 25 miles north and south of Highway 30 and is dumping up to one inch of rain per hour.
Flash flood warnings are in place now for southern Benton, northern Cedar, northern Iowa, northern Johnson and southern Linn counties until 10:15 p.m.
At 2:16, meteorologists with the weather service indicated a nearly stationary line of thunderstorms with all areas receiving between one to two inches of rain over the past two hours.
Additional rainfall of one to three inches is expected over the next several hours, according to the weather service, with isolated amounts of more than four inches possible by mid-evening.
Meteorologists in the KCRG-TV9 Weather Lab say heavy rain is possible through 3:30 p.m.
The amount of rain that fell in a short time can create problems for low-lying areas and cause quick rises in streams and creeks.
