WEST LAFAYETTE -- The Iowa football team piled up 307 rushing yards and beat Purdue on Saturday, 38-14.
Running back Jordan Canzeri, who first found himself in the regular backfield rotation last week against Wisconsin, exploded for 165 yards on 20 carries. The sophomore showed impressive speed in averaging more than 8 yards per carry, and scored the game's first touchdown on a two-yard plunge in the second quarter.
With less than two minutes to go in the first half, the Hawkeyes were tied with the 1-7 Boilermakers. Quarterback Jake Rudock had just overthrown Kevonte Martin-Manley on what would have been an easy touchdown pass.
But from that point, Iowa ran away with the game. A few plays after the misfire, Rudock hit Martin-Manley with a 22-yard strike between two Purdue defenders for a touchdown. And in the second half the Hawkeyes largely kept the ball on the ground and ran right over Purdue, securing their sixth win -- and bowl eligibility -- in the process. Damon Bullock carried the ball 10 times for 85 yards. Mark Weisman ran for 30 yards and a goal-line touchdown. Rudock completed 12-of-20 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
As a team, the Hawkeyes converted 8-of-12 third downs and outgained Purdue, 498 yards to 266. Iowa improved to 6-4, 3-3 in the Big Ten.
