Medal of Honor recipient and Hiawatha native Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta is to meet with Iowa Gov. Chet Culver and be honored in his home state.
The governor's office says Tuesday will be "Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta Day" in Iowa. President Barack Obama presented Giunta with the medal last week at the White House. He is the first living service member from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars to receive the nation's top military award. The public is invited to attend the ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines and meet Giunta and Culver afterward.
Giunta received the medal for courageous actions during battle in Afghanistan in 2007. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School in 2003.
