A Cedar Rapids entrepreneur is expanding her company while keeping another locally-owned business in the area.
Becky Esker, owner of Get Organized!, recently bought Heck's Transfer to expand her company's ability to assist customers in moving and downsizing.
Get Organized! specializes in helping individuals organize their homes, downsize, pack, move, unpack, and store items in an organized way.
'When we pack, we know the whole big picture,” Esker said. 'We're packing for the purposes of unpacking and putting away.”
Before purchasing Heck's Transfer, the company had been using another moving company, but trucks were not always available when it was convenient for the customer.
'It was getting to be kind of frustrating, and I started thinking if we had our own truck, we would be able to meet the needs or our clients that were moving,” Esker said.
Heck's Transfer, founded by Arnold Heck in 1962, was a locally-owned moving company. Arnold Heck died in February 2014.
Heck's Transfer will maintain the same name and phone number, but will be housed out of a new warehouse space at 709 Third Ave. SE. Customers will be able to hire Heck's Transfer for traditional services or will have the opportunity to learn about and use the specialized services offered by Get Organized!
'That's the beauty of it,” Esker said. 'There's lots of choices,”
Since starting her business in 2004, Esker has found multiple ways to expand. Her consignment store, Simply Serendipity Furniture and Décor, helps customers sell the items they got rid of in the downsizing process.
Esker said the next area of growth for her company may be expanding the size of Simply Serendipity Furniture and Décor.
'I'm always looking to grow,” she said. 'When the right opportunity comes along, I'm always good at acting on it.”
