Gender balance conference Sept. 19

Aug. 28, 2009 2:27 pm
MOUNT AUBURN -- Rep. Dawn Pettengill, R-Mount Auburn, is hosting, “Women to Leadership Conference” in response to a new state law requiring gender balance on local government appointed boards and commissions.
The conference will be at from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Blairstown Community Room, 305 Locust St., Blairstown.
Pettengill, a former mayor, noted during debate on the gender balance bill that mandates were unacceptable and instead focusing on skill development, mentoring and networking would bring true reform in this area.
Conference topics include: leadership development, media relations, image, balance and social networking. Numerous speakers, panels and skill presentations are on the agenda, with several women leaders confirmed to attend. There will be opportunities to network and women are encouraged to bring materials for their particular business or interest to share.
Sponsors of the event are the Iowa Commission on the Status of Women, Benton County State Bank, Cedar Valley Bank and Trust, and Keystone Savings Bank. The event has received the support of multiple businesses and organizations, which are participating and donating door prizes and gift bags.
The conference is free, however lunch is $15 and will be provided by Chef Mike Curry of Phat Daddy's in Marengo. RSVP by Sept. 12th at (319)610-3412 or
