Gazette honored with 27 awards in annual award ceremony

The Gazette emerged with the top general excellence and Best In Class advertising awards for multiday newspapers during the annual Iowa Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.
The Gazette received first-place honors for best overall editorial page, best front page, best sports section, best coverage of court and crime and community leadership. Gazette Des Moines Bureau Chief Erin Murphy and Social Video Producer Bailey Cichon were recognized for their work On Iowa Politics Podcast, which was recognized as Best Podcast.
Photojournalist Savannah Blake was recognized with first place awards for best sports photo and news feature photo. Blake finished second for news photo and third in the best photographer contest, news photo and news feature photo contests.
Sports writer Jeff Johnson was recognized with the best sports feature story, while higher education reporter Vanessa Miller was recognized for the best news feature story.
The Gazette was recognized for best ad series/campaign, ads featuring miscellaneous products, and former staffer Seth Smith was honored as best ad designer.
Taking home second place honors were reporter Olivia Cohen for best news feature, while photo editor Jim Slosiarek finished second in best photographer.
Gazette reporters Grace Nieland and Megan Woolard finished in third place for best news story, while Emily Andersen placed third for best continuing coverage for coverage related to immigration.
The Gazette also finished third for ads featuring grocery, food and entertainment and for advertising related to financial services.
The contest was judged by members of the Minnesota Press Association and awards were presented Thursday night at a banquet in Des Moines.
