UPDATE: A natural gas leak closed part of a Cedar Rapids street for more than an hour today.
Firefighters and police blocked off a couple blocks of 33rd Avenue SW after a backhoe punctured a 2-inch gas line at the corner of Remington Street SW around 10 a.m.
Battalion Chief George Bockenstedt said no one from the nearby subdivision was evacuated.
“The wind was blocking it in the right direction, into an open field,” he said.
The street reopened around 11:10 a.m.
