Inquiry into suicide - An inspector general's investigation, requested by several members of Congress in the wake of a veteran's suicide shortly after he was denied admittance to the Iowa City VA hospital, found 'shortcomings' at the facility but could not conclude if any of them led to the death. Read what the investigation and report said here.
Leath gets a pay raise - Former Iowa State University President Steven Leath is earning nearly $100,000 a year more in his new role as president of Auburn University, which also is making him whole for the nearly $1.2 million in deferred compensation he forfeited when leaving Ames.
Leath, who departed ISU in May after more than five years and officially started his duties July 15 in Alabama, is earning a base annual salary of $625,000 — or more than $83,000 above the $541,600 his Auburn predecessor was earning when he left. Read more about Leath's new role here.
Johnson and Linn County School Board Elections - According to school board secretaries for eight local school districts, The Gazette has compiled the candidates who will be on Sept. 12 ballots. You can read the full list for all districts here.
Violent Juveniles - A juvenile court hearing Thursday on where to place a 16-year-old girl convicted of assaulting a residential facility staffer highlights the 'real consequences' of closing the Iowa Juvenile Home/State Training School for girls in 2014.
The girl, who has a pattern of assaultive behavior and was convicted in juvenile court of slicing the neck of a staff member at Four Oaks in Cedar Rapids, has been in the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center since April 11. There is no appropriate facility in Iowa to meet her security and behavioral issues, according to testimony during the hearing. Read about the decisions made in her case here.
On Iowa Pod is back - It is time to listen to some Hawkeye football podcasting. Marc Morehouse returns for another season, and has special guest Scott Dochterman for a season breakdown and walkthrough. They also reminisce about the show's history, as the structure of the show will be changing to include Mike Hlas as Marc's main partner moving forward. You can listen here.
