CEDAR RAPIDS - Four men, who were identified leaving a house on G Ave. NW last month after a 32-year-old man was killed, now face more federal firearm charges.
The four haven't been charged in the fatal shooting of Bryan Ahmaad Edwards on Sept. 10, but were indicted Thursday on several firearm charges stemming from their initial arrest, according to unsealed documents Friday in U.S. District Court.
Derek Hughes-Doby, 28, cousins Cecil Howell, 45, and Treundes Howell, 28, and Keith Moore, Jr., 30, are charged with two counts of possession of firearms by felons and unlawful drug users.
Hughes-Doby also is charged with one count of transferring firearms to felons, three counts of false statement in relation to the purchase of a firearm and three additional counts of possession of a firearm by an unlawful drug user.
The indictment states the men, all previously convicted of drug charges and unlawful marijuana users at the time, had a Glock .40 caliber pistol, a .22 caliber pistol and a Smith and Wesson .40 caliber pistol on Sept. 10.
Hughes-Doby is also accused of transferring the firearms to the others, who were felons, and for making false statements to firearm dealers when purchasing a 9 mm pistol on Feb. 17, 2014, a .380 caliber pistol on March 20, 2014, a .45 caliber pistol on May 4, 2014, and a .40 caliber pistol on June 28. He was also an unlawful drug user when he made those purchases, the indictment states.
Federal documents show a witness described the four as coming to the G Avenue NW house in a white SUV and then leaving after shots were fired on Sept. 10. Investigators found a slide-lock mechanism for a .22-caliber gun at the crime scene. Police stopped the SUV a short time after the shooting and found a .22 caliber with a missing slide-lock outside the vehicle, which officers heard hit the ground when the SUV stopped, and two .40 caliber guns were inside the vehicle, along with marijuana.
Hughes-Doby told a Cedar Rapids police investigator that he was at the house that night because Cecil Howell wanted to retrieve some clothes and got into an argument or fight with Edwards, according to a detention order.
The four will have an arraignment hearing on the additional charges Thursday in U.S. District Court. All the defendants remain in jail pending trial.
