Four hurt in crash in rural Johnson County

JOHNSON COUNTY - Four people were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Sunday afternoon after a vehicle hit a railroad embankment after the driver passed out at the wheel.
The Iowa State Patrol said Thomas Gavin, 72, of Swisher, was driving southbound along Highway 965, north of the Iowa River in Johnson County, at 12:48 p.m. when he lost consciousness because of a medical issue.
Authorities say the the Dodge Grand Caravan struck the east guard rail, drove off the right shoulder and struck the railroad embankment before rolling over.
Gavin and three passengers, Janice Lou Gavin, 69, Kristan Gavin, 6, and Elizabeth Gavin, 11, all of Swisher, were injured and transported to the hospital by ambulance.
