Former Washington High teacher charged with sexual conduct with a student

A former Washington High School social studies teacher in Cedar Rapids was charged Thursday in Linn County District Court with sexual conduct with a student.
Eric Thompson, 38, of 1640 Park Towne Place NE, #3, in Cedar Rapids, was charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee. The complaint alleges Thompson engaged in sexual conduct, including kissing, with a Washington High student between March 1 and 31. Thompson was put on administrative paid leave April 1 and resigned April 8.
Thompson was a social studies teacher, along with a faculty adviser for the school baking club and Warrior Drum Line, according the schools' Web site. Thompson was hired in 2006.
Cedar Rapids Police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said the department conducted the investigation after being contacted by the school district. She had no further details.
According to the complaint, Thompson admitted to the offense.
