Troy Grosenick's debut in the National Hockey League could not have been any better.
The goaltender made 45 saves and posted a shutout as his San Jose Sharks beat the Carolina Hurrricanes, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Raleigh, N.C. It's the most saves in a shutout debut in modern NHL history.
A 25-year-old Milwaukee native, Grosenick is the 14th former Cedar Rapids RoughRider to play in the NHL. He was with the Riders the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons, then played three years at Union College in New York before signing with the Sharks as a non-drafted free agent in the spring of 2013.
Grosenick was recalled to San Jose last week to replace the injured Alex Stalock (also a former RoughRider) on the roster. He is the first Sharks goalie to record a shutout in his debut.
'I would say it's kind of a dream come true,” Grosenick said in a postgame interview with Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. 'It's kind of how you'd write it up when you're a little kid, I guess. The guys played great in front of me, I saw so many pucks, not too many difficult ones, I felt like. I couldn't be happier.”
