DAVENPORT - An Iowa City man who was formerly a Cedar Rapids technical college dean has pleaded guilty to an enticement of a minor charge after he allegedly tried to entice an undercover police officer who was posing as a 14-year-old girl.
According to the United States Attorney's Office, Terry M. Campie, 55, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted enticement of a minor to engage in illicit sexual activities in U.S. District Court in Davenport Monday.
During his proceedings, Campie agreed he attempted to persuade an individual who said she was a 14-year-old girl to engage in sexual activity. That individual was actually an undercover police officer posing as a girl named “Jenny.”
Campie confessed that he used the internet chats as well as his mobile phone to call and text “Jenny,” agreeing he carried out acts which were a “substantial step” toward persuasion or enticement. He also acknowledged the sexual activity he discussed with “Jenny” would have constituted third-degree sexual abuse had he gone through with them.
Campie, who was dean of ITT Technical Institute's Cedar Rapids campus, was arrested April 30, 2010 in Clinton, where investigators said he was expecting to meet a 14-year-old girl he'd been chatting with online. That person turned out to be an undercover sheriff's deputy.
The investigation was conducted by the Clinton County Sheriff's Office, the Clinton, Dewitt and Iowa City Police departments, the F.B.I. and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
