A former Iowa football player with a history of legal problems has been arrested for allegedly stealing a car.
Lee Roy Gray, 27, faces a charge of operating a vehicle without the owner's consent.
He was driving a BMW on the 300 Block of E. Prentiss Street in Iowa City at 1:36 a.m. March 5 when he was arrested for driving while barred. The owner of the car said Gray did not have permission to drive it.
Gray, of 1509 N. Olde Hickory Rd. in Coralville, was in Johnson County Jail Friday on a $5,000 cash-only bond. Operating a vehicle without consent is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in jail.
Gray has run into trouble with the law numerous times in recent years, mostly on driving and drug-related offenses, according to online court records.
Gray, a native of Dallas, played offensive line for the Hawkeyes from 2001 to 2005. He started 11 games at left tackle in 2004. He did not play in 2005 because of injury.
