A former Iowa City psychologist who was sentenced to prison on child pornography charges has surrendered his license to practice psychology.
Howard Weinberg, 61, waived his right to a hearing before the Iowa Board of Psychology in November and agreed to voluntarily surrender his license.
Weinberg, who was the first director of the Iowa City Crisis Center, was sentenced in September to the maximum 10 years in prison on federal child pornography charges, followed by 10 years of supervised release.
He pleaded guilty in March to federal charges of possessing sexually explicit materials involving children.
In 2008, an Iowa City computer business notified the Iowa City Police Department after discovering child pornography on a personal computer Weinberg brought for repair.
Iowa City Police obtained warrants for the computer and Weinberg's home and authorities seized numerous computers and other equipment and documents.
Police say they found hundreds of images and dozens of videos, many depicting children under the age of 10 engaging in sex acts with adults or posed in the nude.
One image showed a naked child tied face down with a rope, police said.
Should Weinberg ever seek reinstatement of his psychology license, he would have to show that the basis for his license surrender no longer exists and that it would be in the public's interest for the license to be reinstated.
