Former Iowa Hawkeyes pitcher Matt Dermody was recalled to the major leagues Thursday by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Dermody, 26, was a 26th-round draft pick of the Jays in 2013. He began this season in high-Class A at Dunedin, ascending to Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo before his promotion to the bigs.
His 2016 minor league ledger: 3-1 record, three saves and a 1.82 earned run average in 47 appearances. The left-hander allowed 55 hits in 54 1/3 innings, walking eight and striking out 47.
When he pitches for Toronto, Dermody will be the 31st former Hawkeye to play in the major leagues. He'll be the first since Wes Obermueller in 2007.
The previous six Hawkeyes to play in MLB were Obemueller, Cal Eldred, Bo Porter, Chris Hatcher, Mike Boddicker and Tim Costo.
