Former Cedar Rapids school employee charged with stealing from district

Former Cedar Rapids school employee Jamie May was charged Tuesday with stealing up to $250,000 from the district over the past two years.
May, 42, of 1920 Rockford Rd. SW, made an initial appearance on one count of first-degree theft. She was released after her appearance.
Arrested Aug. 28, May is charged with embezzling from the district between Jan. 1, 2008, and Aug. 26, according to the complaint. She worked as a secretary in the district accounting department.
May was placed on administrative leave, with pay, after police contacted school officials Aug. 18. The state auditor's office is conducting an independent investigation. The district's loss will be reimbursed by insurance.
