CEDAR RAPIDS -- Federal money for debris collection in the flood zone will run out on Nov. 26, bringing a close to the chapter of piles of junk in front of homes throughout portions of Cedar Rapids.
The city's solid waste and recycling division is asking residents to put the last of their debris in front of their homes by Oct. 31.
So far, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has covered $5.6 million in flood debris removal. The average daily cost of flood debris removal in residential areas is $2,700.00.
Flood debris must be segregated into the following piles;
Appliances
• Fridges, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, washers, dryers, freezers, window and central air conditioners, water heaters, furnaces, dehumidifiers.
Household Hazardous waste
• Paints (latex and oil based), solvents, cleaning solvents, gasoline, oils, pesticides, fertilizers,
Electronics
• Computers, stereos, VCR's, DVD players, toaster ovens.
Scrap Metal
• Pots and pans, shelves, BBQ's, exercise equipment, patio furniture, chairs, etc.
Garbage
• Furniture, household belongings, damaged drywall, plaster, wood lathing, wood decking, playhouses, kid's toys, etc.
